I'd set one up but I'm pretty sure I don't have permission to make integrations post to #announcements

There is a link to it on the site. I don't want to add integrations to announcements as it should be as streamline as possible

For Bo and Riyadth: "Cosmodrome"
https://www.netflix.com/title/80119093?s=i

@Jon Coonan You asked about where I work: http://www.synapse.com/
We had a marketing company build a site for us so we could tell the world about what we do: https://www.themuse.com/companies/synapse
I'm featured in a video! :-)

Is there any way we can get sponsors/logos on a vest/waistcoat instead of T-shirts this year? Otherwise it will be difficult to show off our logos if we go all steampunk...

How opposed do you think people would be to making the base color black? I'm just curious

Hmm. Yellow on black would stand out really nicely. I saw some vests online that had a colorful front (some patterned, some plain), and a black back. Putting sponsor logos on the black background would be cool. And if we can get a blue front, then our Spartronics logo could be close to "normal"

Also, recalling that there was an airship in the teaser, something like this might inspire inspiration. Maybe for the driving team? https://www.amazon.com/Steampunk-Airship-Captain-Flying-Vest/dp/B005466G0I

Yeah I really like the idea of yellow on black it looks great as well as brighter colors of blue.

It might be easy to make it as a "panel" that we can pin to regular shirts/vests.

I personally like black with our colors better it makes yellow stand out a lot better and is good with the white sponser logos as well.

We could dress up our logo with a steampunk/Victorian font, and maybe stylize our gear to make it more steampunky. Maybe have it connect to one or more smaller gears?

They have to be certified safety glasses... These will do: https://www.amazon.com/ArcOne-G-FLY-A1101-Fly-Safety-Goggles/dp/B003WE9ZG6

I have The Fly ArcOne goggles if anyone wants to see them. The lenses are much bigger than typical steampunk welding goggles. Much more bug like. If you're going to punk these, let's talk. We can share ideas.

Another good engineering documentary is "Azorian" about the 1974 US attempt to salvage a sunken Soviet ballistic missile sub at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Think Recycle Rush on a grand scale under water.

If anyone's interested in mapping downtown Winslow on Sunday the 16th, https://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Seattle/events/234662245

Think 'the wikipedia of maps'. here's what winslow looks like right now on OpenStreetMap: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/47.62420/-122.51598

Back on the topic of goggles, what is the certification required? I'm looking at these... https://smile.amazon.com/Industrial-Steampunk-Welding-Goggles-Standard/dp/B01GDE64MY/ref=sr112?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1475872226&sr=1-12&keywords=cool+safety+glasses+flip+up Amazon says they meet the following certifications: ANSI & CE Approved as protective safety Goggles. Exceeds ANSI Z87.1 & Z80.3 Standards

How will you convince the pit goggle gatekeepers that they are safety goggles and not cosplay goggles? "Amazon says so" might not work since they look the same as $7 cosplay ones. Try and find a manufacturer's or brand spec. Perhaps packaging says it?

I just think they're cool lookin' :slightlysmilingface: But seriously, I agree there would need to be a way to prove they meet spec for the reason you describe

The Z87 tells you that they are safety rated. Your safety glasses should have the number as well.

According to the FRC safety manual:
Safety Glasses Requirements
Wear ANSI-approved, UL Listed, or CSA rated non-shaded safety glasses. Lightly tinted Yellow, Rose, Blue, and Amber tints are FIRST approved. Reflective lenses are prohibited, your eyes must be clearly visible to others. The use of anything other than ANSI-approved, UL-Listed, or CSA rated eye protection is prohibited.

I think those markings on the goggles are sufficient to show they meet the requirements.

If you (the general you) are considering The Fly goggles mentioned above, visit the manufacture's web site for a spec of the googles. Different model numbers have different tints (from 10% to 90%) and many are mirrored. I got the ones with only a 10% tint (i.e., block 10% of light, basically, clear). Unfortunately, they are mirrored. I removed the mirror coating with automotive polish (because that's what I had). If I saw the Titus ones to begin with, I probably would've done that. It seems easier. But I do like the larger field of vision on The Fly. They're just going to take more work.

I like them both, and agree the Fly goggles have advantages. I found a decent deal on the Titus ones with removable medium shaded lenses (could come in handy) & so I ordered a pair to evaluate the quality. I'll probably put them in the robotics room.

I thought I'd drop a plug for our locally owned Ace Hardware store. While most of the projects are for weapons, You can easily use it for other accessories more applicable to FRC. http://steampunk.wonderhowto.com/news/28-most-popular-steampunk-materials-your-local-hardware-store-0141461/

I remember hearing about someone on Chief Delphi saying that there were going to be teams with a two ball autonomous. Probably has to be set up just right though.

Do we have any singers on the team? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLQ9Do4PGK4

does "Sat, November 5, 7am – 5pm" mean:
1. workshops start at 7, be at the door earlier
2. registration/welcoming starts at 7, but can arrive later
3. leave Bainbridge on the 7 am ferry
4. meet at BHS at 7 am to set up carpools

I assume the 7:05am ferry will be the right choice, to get to the school before the event starts.

Yes, it always seems to be that way. At the workshop they hand out nice schedules with lots of detail, but they don't pre-publish them.

Hey if any of you guys going tomorrow have not been to the play I'm planning on attending (starts at 7, we can go get dinner then head there). You guys should come, it'll be fun

When the police chief came into talk and asked who wrote the federalist papers I swear I blurted out John Jay James Madison and Alexander Hamilton so fast he didn't hear me XD

Wanted to share something I recently wrote on Tech Trends https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/magnificent-7-tech-trends-watch-kevin-hawkins

I found an electric inflator in the trash in the gym and when I asked the gym teacher about it she said that she had thrown it away because some students had broken it

If you think about it the "make it work then make it work better" approach has some very severe limitations

in most scenarios it is much more economical to simply make it work the best it possibly can, before you build it

I was so moved by it I decided to install the ruby development environment from IBM into my eclipse installation

Extremely - file types like .jpg make automatic color adjustments and compress. .cr2, .dng and other camera raw types do not

You are allowed, after all to send emails containing an infinite number of characters so a piece of software that can turn a file like an hour long movie in MPEG-4 format into a long string of text that can be copypasted into an email and sent without running into the attachment limit would be super great!

base64 / asciiarmor but your emails will certainly be bounced for size if you're sending full movies in any format at all

If the file had been converted to text you could just copy paste sections of it into email and send them one at a time with instructions telling the other person how to reassemble them into the full file

I don't really care about how long it takes particularly I just want the file to get to its destination without any loss in quality

because you know its important for backups to not be HORRIBLY CORRUPTED DURING TRANsFER OFFSITE

I do need a 3d printer fixed as well please message me if you know how to run 3d printers

I noticed somebody using the latest version of Linux Mint at the last programming meeting to access the internet. If that person could clue me in on how to access the school wifi with an unsupported OS I would really appreciate it

the instructions in this guide don't work on anything other than ubuntu 15.10 or fedora 22

Early into break - not very expensive and we will put them on the cars when we go to competition

JeVois Smart Machine Vision Camera - amazing! I recommend the video. http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/jevois-smart-machine-vision-camera-03-01-2017/

this is pretty important I need to move like half a terabyte of stuff a minute guys

@Tom Wiggin I believe that only USB-C supports computer-to-computer transfer over a normal cable. Regular USB (1.1 through 3.0) from a computer with a type-A connector cannot connect to another computer with a type-A cable (even though those cables exist...)

Special data transfer cables do exist, which emulate a network between the two computers.

You could put both computers on the LAN and transfer files that way. Either connect them to your normal LAN (so they get IP addresses through DHCP), or set IP addresses manually so they can talk to each other (pick two addresses on the same network, like 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0)

If the computers are running Linux then you could use 'scp' to copy individual files, or 'rsync' to copy entire directory trees.

You might need to install and configure Samba on the Mint computer, then connect to it with Windows file sharing from the Windows side. Then copy files using the Windows file manager.

Which way do you want to move the files? Windows to Mint, or the other way around?

Well, I know that you can set up Mint to act as a Windows file share with the Samba package. That way it looks just like any other Windows machine on the network. Likewise, you should be able to mount a Windows machine that is shared using a network filesystem... I know I've done that, but I can't remember how. Let me look it up.

Here are some links about accessing data on the network: https://www.linux.com/learn/linux-migration-guide-accessing-windows-data-linux-and-vice-versa

More details here: http://www.howtogeek.com/176471/how-to-share-files-between-windows-and-linux/

I remember now that I used CIFS when I did it long ago. I haven't had Windows in the house for years, though.

I see that Mint makes some things easier: https://windyweather.net/2015/09/27/linux-mint-windows-file-sharing-just-works/

I think we should have moved this to a private channel, but I have to go now anyway. Good luck. These links should give you pointers. My last Google search was for 'network file sharing windows linux mint'. You can see what else pops up if you search.

I freaking hate windows 10 so much, I was working on some stuff and EVEN THOUGH I HAD DEFERRED UPDATES AND TOLD IT TO REQUIRE AUTHORIZATION TO BEGIN UPDATING IT FREAKING SHUTDOWN AND STARTED DOING JUST THAT!

When prototyping, remember that we want to shoot balls into the boiler twice as fast as this paper airplane gun launches airplanes!

Too bad we can't throw airplanes at FIRST events any more...

what if we took chalk and made a spartronics logo on one of the brick walls in the 300 build? Or we could do like a poster if that's to crazy

That would look really cool. The school might not like it though. Wagon wheel maybe?

Im going to just put it out there that neither Spartronics, the captains, or any mentors condone vandalism however well meaning

We could talk to the school about something removable (not paint) in the wagon wheel perhaps

Graffiti isn't always vandalism Jon but your right that the school wouldn't like damage to it's walls

I just picked up an enormous roll of yellow plastic though and we could probably use it as a canvas

and there is an old house being demolished in my neighborhood so I could probably ask for one of the window frames and use it as a frame for the canvas

all we would need is one masonry screw a bucket of blue paint some rivets and loads of painters tape

Whatever artwork you do on your own time is  in my book. If you want to use it for team stuff, we can take a look when its done

if we make this we could probably put it in the bainbridge art museum in front of the ferry terminal

Hi all, my friend from college Todd Miller owns his own spring company (Myers Spring) in Indiana, and coincidently FIRST asked him to make 400 of the springs that will be installed on Steamworks fields for collecting gears. Anyone know how to tie a monkey's fist knot? If not, anyone interested in learning? A thin rope may be used with the climber & a really big knot like the monkey's fist is likely what would be needed for a stopper knot. I can tie a Monkeys Fist. My grandfather was a sailor and I learned from some of his sailing books. I just need to know what size of rope you think it should be tied out of.

I see we're doing pretty well in the overall Pacific Northwest District rankings. I'm very proud of our team (and am wearing my team shirt today at work)!

My tattoo lasted the night and I wore it to school as well. Got a few curious stares but it was fun to explain to a those who asked as well!

New Jetson TX2 out today. Looks powerful but a bit expensive.- at least there is an academic discount http://www.pcworld.com/article/3178059/hardware/nvidias-pascal-powered-jetson-tx2-computer-blows-away-raspberry-pi.html

Remember to factor in the cost of the heat sink (not pictured). It makes the board sooo much bigger.

Yes, but I like their gear + shooting a bit better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRtaGtriAAI

I actually commented on their video (something I never do), and said how similar our robots are in general design.

Yeah, it'd be nice to be on their team; it looks like they get 40 kPa during auto, then shift into being a gear bot.

yeah. They're an older team and have a lot of experience, it's pretty cool though.

On citrus circuits, I noticed that they had 2 flywheels side-by-side on one track/ramp. Interesting design.

(if so, since I'd be late anyway + will miss Wednesday, I don't think I'll come)

4918 has a pretty accurate shooter. They have to shoot from a floating position, so if their drivers get that field spot down, they could do really well.

I'm proud of our team! Good job drivers + human players, good job scouts, good job marketers, (tiny yay for mechanics) and thank your parents for the support!

And good the cheering is improving (I mean we did get the spirit award) - thanks for responding to me, If anyone has any good cheer ideas please let me know! (Or suggestions)

Also for those out there who didn't know - we brought Valhalla to elimination for the first time in their whole experience with first - don't regret picking them, they deserved it (they're older than us as well). They also have no parent support or mentors, and barely any sponsors and few members. They have to work so much harder than many other teams, yet they did so well. Impressive to say the least.

Proud of all who worked on the robot, those who attended and those who helped out our team in anyway. We did the best we've ever done and we should be proud of our accomplishments

Okay okay this is pretty bad but what if we did cheer that was "1, 2, 3, SHOOT!" (I would yell the 1, 2, 3)

Cheers have to be simple if they're going to be effective. Make use of the vowels in Helios if you want to do a cheer for him.

It sounds better to spell it (without the s) in my head, you'll have to say it to me

One thing I'd like to mention on cheers: It would be good to have the 'crowd' portion of the cheer be a full word or phrase. I feel that the '49'-'15' cheer results in others in the gym mostly just hearing the '15' part. (Except in the times when Rose is louder than the rest of the team :-)

I kind of like the way SOTAbots repeat their 'oh, yeah' chant, rather than split it up.

I think the numbers are trouble, unless you can get us to say the whole thing

(Oh, no... maybe I secretly wish I were on their team? Nooooo! Spartronics is way more fun!)

(I have to keep track of how many times I say the 11 though we'll go to long XD)

especially if it goes from quiet to loud, capping it off with a loud spartronics or 4915 would be great

I could yell BINARY! To get us started (because not everyone is quick to respond)

I like it! Even though not everyone knows binary it's interesting and teams could ask about it and we'll be known for it eventually if we keep it up

like 49-15 or we are - spartronics is easy because they're short and understandable

Numbers can be easier, like the ones and zeros repetitively one after another is easy to do.

I propose this (as a starting point). "Team spartronics drive and thrive. F R C 4 9 1 5.

I like it? I'm still hesitant to do longer phrases (maybe because my voice will die), but I'm definitely open to it.

It only works if you get the syllabication right. Say it out loud. I think you need 'team'

How about 'Ole, ole, ole, ole' from Chumbawamba's Top of the world? Or some other fun song clip?

I was thinking of having a small segment of a song that everyone knows, and when Spartronics sings it, everyone can get the song stuck in their head.

or 1333 in hexadecimal! (4915)
- but that's too similar to a theoretical frc team number, so binary is way cooler. I suppose morse code could be tried too. Or binary-coded decimal.
:slightlysmilingface:

A question from a friend: How did Neobots (team 2903) already qualify for worlds? According to The Blue Alliance (and the team homepage), they are going to Worlds:

https://www.instructables.com/id/Perpetual-Clock-With-Arduino/
Interesting part of this instructable is the use of Fusion360 to design gears for 3d printing.

Here's a multipart instructable on robots that has some nice elements... Perhaps good for managing summer boredom?
https://www.instructables.com/lesson/Getting-Started-With-Robots/

And they have a floating position on the field, with our auto and them, we might be able to get 40kpa during the game

Sounds like phun. But we might have to scout Friday night. ? If you wish to go you will need a driver and one adult.

Very exciting elimination match featuring three of the best shooters in the PNW; Roboctopi, Bear Metal, and Xbot

I blame you @Chris Rininger for getting me into a wormhole of science related articles and then black hole videos (welp there goes an hour of my life, I just need to go close to a blackhole now to get my homework done (actually that'd be counterproductive because then all time would go faster than me and I'd never turn in my homework))

Sharing a few things I stumbled upon recently. Since they are links, I'm going to put them inside a comment on this to (hopefully) avoid a vertically huge post. Let's see if it works...

First thing up is this “Roboleague” video from a couple of years ago. Dean and Woodie have a few spots, but mostly it’s about a few teams and their efforts to win Einsteins. There are a couple smaller, “good-but-not-elite” teams, but I’d say there is more attention given to a few of the higher performing teams (Robonauts, Cheesy Poofs), and the video provides an interesting view into the positives and negatives of being on teams like that. I assume people who have been around a while have seen the video, but others probably have not… https://vimeo.com/141502715
Next, is a set of resources actually. Similar to Skunkworks, Citrus Circuits does a set of fall workshops for other teams, and they post videos of them online. I highly recommend the Strategic Design presentation, and the others look good too. Here’s a link to the full set: http://www.citruscircuits.org/fall-workshops.html I get a sense that sharing, collaboration, and helping other teams is something that team really emphasizes – kudos to them!
Finally, something fun. If you have an Xbox 360, there’s actually an FRC game from 2012 available for $3. Catalyst 2012. Here’s the link, but you’ll probably need to search for it on your console. http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Catalyst-2012/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258550c64

Here's the trailer for Catalyst 2012. Graphics are not... awesome... but game play and robot config options look pretty good. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=catalyst+2012+video&view=detail&mid=82365A10757AA72A3FDF82365A10757AA72A3FDF&FORM=VIRE

great set of resources! I found this talk particularly valuable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVacrE4sKig

Totally agree - I would recommend anyone, especially leadership, watch the Strategic Design one

While the video production quality isn't as good, both the 2015 and 2016 mechanical design presentations seem to have good tips about how to (& not to) use CAD within an overall design process, including recommended time savers.

Yellow: `#fcff00`

You can do it yourself! :-) Drop down the menu next to Spartronics4915 in the upper left corner of the screen, select Preferences, and then select Sidebar Theme. If you are already using Cruz's theme colors, then they will be in the custom setting section. You can change the colors the way you like, and share it here.

Using the logo colors that James used, #1455fb,#15467a,#fcff00,#383F45,#fcff00,#FFFFFF,#fcff00,#1455fb looks more like the spartronics logo.

I've heard that we need to show up at 2 and that we need to show up at 3 for Rotary from different places, and I'm a little confused about which time is correct. Anyone know?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WshJjLUdPhE For next year - simulating the new game we might consider using pvc pipes to simulate robots and put red/blue taping on them for allience representation. Look at the last 30 seconds of the video or so.

Nice idea! Gives perspective to the size of the robot with relation to the field area. This idea should probably be posted in strategy, not random :-)

Also thanks Riyadth! I think it'd be an easy idea to implement and have some fun with.

I think I'll be going with my dad, as he used to work at Kings as a teacher and wants to visit and talk to the team.

You didn't he's joking that you should have replaced worse with better :facewithrolling_eyes:

That would be interesting however I'm pretty sure they're going with this sort of 'timeline' thing with the imperialistic powers game (stronghold), and the victorian era (steamworks), so my hope is that it's like the Roaring 20's this time. :joy:

Sammmme. 1969 was a good year. OH what if we had a car-themed game! Now THAT sounds good!

But Star Wars happened a long time ago in a galaxy that is confusingly un advanced.

The teaser will be out at 4 tonight and there's like a little show going on the livestream. I won't be able to watch it so I recommend someone else does and reports back

Maybe they'll do what they did last year and scare everyone in the kickoff video

I remember several students and mentors playing this game outside at worlds, so thought I would share. AI cropping up everywhere these days. https://blogs.microsoft.com/ai/2017/09/13/microsofts-social-bot-zo-wants-play-exploding-kittens/

That's what I thought. I doubt they would put such a huge hint as to the new game pieces in the teaser it must be an old one!

This is really kinda weird for me because I started building a little portable arcade machine and to see the trailer be about arcade machine. Weirden me out

zoom in on the graphics on the side and front of the video game machine in the video + the above (is that from the DLC pack?) - how do wheeled robots climb steps? may need to figure that out

OHHHH thats interesting! I came up with an idea on how to get a robot to climb stairs recently, weird.

River raid is one of the first but that was an Atari game. We also have 1942 which involves water but mostly is flying, some pinball machine had water themes

About that 8-bit logo...
Process (Windows only - sorry)
- Load high-res logo into Microsoft Paint
- Save As and select 256 colors option
- Resize to 100x100
- Zoom in as much as possible
- Use screen snip tool to capture pixelated logo
You can use this same kind of approach with any picture - give it a try.

No problem - fun to play... I need to simplify those instructions & I can't edit the original. Here's the simpler method for 8-bit image transformation with MS Paint:
Process (Windows only - sorry)
- Load high-res image into Microsoft Paint (take note of the size - the logo is 900x900)
- Save As and select 256 colors option
- Resize to 100x100
- Resize back to the original size (this way, no need to use screen snip tool)

I saw someone speculate that the 8/9 FRC blog post from Frank Merrick may be something of a game hint. The post is about surprises, how they can disrupt the "auto-pilot" routines we tend to fall into, and how that can be a good thing. The person who speculated it's a game hint thinks it may be foreshadowing of a surprising difference between this year's game and past games, and they specifically mention that maybe this year's game will not be very compatible with the usual wheeled WCDs and similar wheeled drive trains. Put that together with the stairs and ramps imagery from the teaser, and I'd say there's a fair chance tracked robots could come into play this year. And/or possibly robot arms that pick things up and place them since it has apparently been a while since there was a game with that requirement. Fun to speculate - here's that blog post: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/blog/2017-surprises

SO COOL!!!!!!!!! Chris I am constantly astonished at how broad your skills and interests are.

I was astonished to learn about the pulleys, how they clamshell ignored separate and come together for the purpose of applying a different working radius to the triangular belt to change the ratio. That is absolutely brilliant. I watched this with James Sovic and we were freaking out.

Is this the year there will be an oculus in the kop? https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/03/scientists-test-vr-system-to-control-robots-from-virtual-cockpit/

Look at this little cnc robot... https://www.geeky-gadgets.com/autonomous-goliath-cnc-robot-04-10-2017/

the sehome seamonsters are doing an event a few blocks down from my dorm, did we have much connection with them as a team? I'd like to say hi

We played cards against humanity with like their entire team in the hotel lounge thingy

@Cruz Strom and I were talking today and we were thinking that for “squad day” tomorrow, if you’re not already doing something or if your outfit allows it, we should wear our spartronics

It's kind of like Human Heater from an episode of Silicon Valley… except this is safe.

OK, our next robot needs some cables... https://gfycat.com/EnragedFickleCommongonolek

The safety animation contest has been announced, and it reinforces the video game theme of the upcoming season.

Anyone interested in taking on the challenge to make an animation this year? Here's an award we haven't won yet!

@Chris Rininger https://www.clarifai.com Was the the image training site that I was talking about.

Declan was our most talkative member of the week! Congratulations Declan I’m proud

A thought: maybe create a Slack channel for people interested in working on the team avatar? @Peter Hall, check out the marketing channel - there's a link to an app there that's pretty good for creating pixel art (I like it better than the two FIRST pointed to)

Since it’s a long weekend, here’s an iOS app for creating pixel art: “Pixel Art Maker” in the lifestyle category, produced by Nekomimimi. I’m sure there are android apps as well. Remember to resize to 40 pixels by 40 pixels if you’re trying to make a usable avatar for the upcoming season. Have fun!

But in reality the old ways are often best... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GE6-3VFtUrc

Leaked 2018 field (Found this on grab-cad, someone having a little too much time on their hands) No way that this thing is real
https://grabcad.com/library/2018-field-2

I don’t think that is real because that looks exactly the same as the steamworks field

https://youtu.be/H8cxc8wCuWI
This is probably not feasible to build or even consider due to the time interval and resource limits, but it’s still cool and we could use some of the basic ideas.

I think I saw an FRC bot with that approach. I think they called it a “butterfly drive” with the 4 pairs of wheels that can each move like that to go over obstacles.

It’s a thing - search Chief Delphi. It looks like teams used it more to switch between treaded and Omni wheels.

On another topic; the 2018 FIRST totes came out today. I was looking at the black tote option and compared to the 2017 one, it is a few inches smaller and 20lbs less massive.

That is impressive. If there is stair climbing and rules permit it, I expect to see someone try to do a wheels + lower-able wide center track like that

What if we were able to get Spartan News to play the Power Up game vidéo next week.

The school doesn’t care that much to watch the video, they’ll all be super bored if we don’t give them a good reason to pay attention

Oh that is so cool!! What an cool idea. Doesn’t look as realistic for us to build in six weeks though :joy::joy:

Thought everyone should see this meme made by @Sean Lafer about the field videos

I want to start a petition to make @Darwin Clark return @Harrison's graph paper, vote with a :+1: if you agree or a :-1: if you disagree

Guys stop voting as separate messages vote as a reaction on my original message, it makes polling easier for me. Also only vote once so I can get an accurate result, that means you @Cruz Strom

If we get enough CIMs on the robot, think of the music we could play! https://youtu.be/q260bjSiyq0

A quote from Ian: "I've never been happier to eat someone else's trash!" When eating the crumbs on the bottom of a bag of Safeway Chicken Tenders.

Yeah @Harrison! That was very nice considering we have been eating primarily mints for the past few weeks. :stuckouttongueclosedeyes:

I think that we have another thing of mints that could be donated. No promises though

Hey, during the last robotics meeting, did anyone see a jacket similar to this one? On accident, I grabbed Cruzes, so my actual jacket is still at large.

I like the idea of a "Tesla Hybrid" ... electric with a Merlin rocket engine for those "special occasions".

I appreciate this photo for many reasons. Terry looks like he’s just casually using the force

For anyone interested in electronic circuit prototyping, I see that the Living Computer Museum is having a workshop on Friday next week (Feb 23): http://www.livingcomputers.org/Events/Calendar.aspx

Hey everyone, got an S.O.S from peacock family services trying to identify this type of latch, anyone know?

Sorry it’s not a meme, but I thought you guys might get a kick out of this. I’m cleaning out the garage and will probably end up tossing it unless someone has an interest in it, but I thought you’d think it cool.

I love this image because it looks like Binnur is about to start a rap battle with the robot.

Cool bots are being announced. Check out this one - looks like it specializes in the exchange and climb with friends (maybe the switch if the front intake pivots up - maybe even the scale if it can shoot when motors reverse). The climb with friends forks are quite similar to what we were thinking about doing. https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=162953

Yeah, they build a full size field, and they have a lot of different robots, the everybot was finished very early on, I was able to visit their shop the stronghold year, it’s really cool

My father and I actually had a discussion about that dog robot. It’s both genius and terrifying.

Even better - their bipedal robot. I wish our Atlas was like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRj34o4hN4I

Overall, my favorite is the LS3 (Legged Squad Support System). It carries 400 pounds and only needs to be recharged after 20 miles, which is a standard day's march.

Just got absolutely destroyed by a child I was overseeing. I showed him the Robonauts video and then one of THEMIS, and he said “How come you made two robots but neither are that cool?”

The robot dog is cool if you haven’t seen what happened to the 12 colonies. An event that forced the ageing Battlestar Galactica to lead 52000 people to the mythical 13th colony known as Earth.

https://youtu.be/B2Z5jlHdC68 some more of our competition. The single elevator is slighty... disconcerning? I wonder if it'll ever break

Aussie... My suspicion that well-optimized shooters and climb with friends bots will be deadly this year seems to be coming true. It’s all about winning the switches and scale early

Even then they're not using it for climbing...? It looks like they were using a rope?

Without a climb with friends, I think our best chance at doing well (early on) is to always get the auto quest by being a consistent scorer on the opposite switch sides when we don't have capable alliance partners.

Hey all, if anyone needs a ride with Bill this Saturday please let chee and Bill know ASAP

All!! Nicely done :) I hope you had as much fun as I did this weekend! Looking forward to seeing what you will do at the next competition.

Swerve would be a very interesting off-season project. 1640 stated that they have to build their Swerve system during build season (something that takes about 5 weeks) however, I don’t think that is necessary, rather, it is something that could be done preseason. This would allow us to have a swerve drive that we could use if needed.

Rules say you can design and prototype in off season, but fabricated items must be done during the season, not before.

Design and practice using the design are most of the battle if a team has & knows how to use CAM via a CNC. This was 2910’s formula with their swerve

First: It surprises us that we feel the need to say this, please don’t put the POWER CUBE cover on
anyone’s head and zip it closed; also, don’t eat it.

Is anyone else mildly freaked out by this robot? https://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/46067

Is there any chance someone could give me a ride to Glacier Peak when we have the competition? Preferably leaving and arriving on Saturday.

Gang,
I just got back from the weekly Rotary meeting and heard two things of interest here. (a) Clio Batali, team captain last year and daughter of @Dana Batali wrote the club a nice "Thank You" note for the scholarship she got last year. She's doing well at MIT and appreciates the scholarship. I think she said something about going to India over the summer for some kind of an internship. (b) This year's batch of scholarship application is due this Friday. I've sat on this committee before, read the applications before and interviewed the candidates before. I'm telling you, if you're reading this you've got a fighting chance at a scholarship. That's doubly true if you're considering NOT going to university straight away but are looking a career or technical -- pay lots of attention to that "Career / Technical Education Scholarship"
The application forms are on the Rotary Web site and are due this Friday. Thinks it's to late and this is too last minute? I've read the applications from the folks before you. I've heard from the committee members this year. You are not too late, right now. But you will be on Saturday.
http://www.bainbridgeislandrotary.org/
Please, tag friends here or copy, and forward to friends elsewhere.
And, needless to say, if you've got questions or concerns, feel free to hit me up here or fb or text 206 550 6241.
@Jon Coonan -- I assume you're an admin here. Please consider posting to Announcements.

Team Update 17: https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.net/frc2018/Manual/TeamUpdates/TeamUpdate17.pdf. NOT to be missed!

@Chris Rininger Those seem like very drastic changes to make this late in the season.

I agree it's troubling. How many teams will be forced to redesign parts of their robot?

Team 2471 Team Mean Machine has a good 2 cube auto. Watching Lake Oswego Semifinals.

2471 also has climb with friends that worked in the first finals match of Lake Oswego

I know that we just qualified for districts and it is exciting don't get me wrong, but we should all respect team 1571 CALibrate robotics, they were unfortunately the 65 ranked team.

A family friend that we're visiting in Colorado runs a business called Paint the Pine, it allows you to print anything as a stencil and then paint it onto boards of pine. I decided to make this one today.

If they wanted a beautiful robot why not take jack in the bot, they have swerve drive not us.

I got a kick out of this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubberduckdebugging?wprov=sfla1. For April Fools Stack Overflow created quack overflow.

Hey all, I'm so proud of everyone these last few days! I know seems thing grim, but I think we could easily turn this around into an upbeat sports movie montage :ok_hand:

Great job all around, scouters, mechanics, our amazing mascots. Special shout out to drive team. Great job Kenneth, Sovick, Will, Jon, and Rose

if you are in the pits and aren’t doing anything, come out to the stands and help us cheer. Our section of the stands is looking very empty.

Hey anyone that is not needed in the pit come on up before match 102 upfront we are in match 103 and we need some team spirit

Hey I have worms set up in room 506 if you want to. I can get 3 or 4 more people into playing worms

If you’re just hanging around in the pit doing nothing, come up to the stands and help us cheer.

Been an honor to work with all of you these past few months. Best year I ever had. I'm thrilled to see how we do next year!

Great intro for a newbie. Had a great time! Looking forward to being able to contribute more next year.

I was just looking at this company again. Their robotics kits look really cool, but no prices on the website ("click here for quote") probably means the same thing as no prices on a restaurant menu :slightlysmilingface:. Link to kits: https://www.hebirobotics.com/robotic-kits

Here is Andrew Slocum's "Design is a Passionate Process" white paper. It's a good (but somewhat long) read on design in the context of MIT's famous hands-on design class: http://web.mit.edu/2.75/fundamentals/FUNdaMENTALs%20Book%20pdf/FUNdaMENTALs%20Topic%201.PDF .
Since the format of the class is a new game each year with the assignment of designing and building a machine to play the game, there are lots of parallels with FRC here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any students or mentors interested in diving deep into mechanical design process.
I found the link to the above within FRC team 3847 Spectrum's expansive Design Concepts presentation that I've shared before. Here's the link to that again in case you missed it the first time: http://blog.spectrum3847.org/2017/12/spectrum-design-concepts.html

Hello everyone, I have a class at work this week on girls-only welding, but next to no one is showing up and there are lots of open spots. If any girls are interested in joining, or if you know any who would like to learn, please DM me, it’s a fun learning experience.

Anyone want to try driving robots? Here's the latest Autodesk Synthesis simulator. If running on a less powerful machine, adjust display settings accordingly. To get a flavor, watch the video. https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=166256

Tarkan sent me a link to the ARUW robotics event in China! https://youtu.be/ncTyy0XQ6nA
(If you watch closely, you'll see a wheel fall off their robot!)

(Tarkan is not in China, he's interning in California this summer. Others on the team went without him.)

I’m thinking of checking out the Seattle Mini Maker Faire at MoPop today. It runs tomorrow as well. Anyone else going? http://seattle.makerfaire.com/

I just completed forensic disassembly of an OFO bike. It is very interesting study in design. Perhaps that is a good thing to do in the pre-season. I got mine from the pile next to the Bainbridge Police Station (I asked first). I don't know how fast they are disappearing, but one with both wheels is a must. Lights are highly desirable because of some of the interesting features they have, but those features make them attractive to salvagers who don't want whole bikes.

hopefully you put it back together and put it back into service? Inquiring minds, etc.. :slightlysmilingface:

For those interested in the electronics side of the OFO bike (Australian style): http://ofodufafa.blogspot.com/2018/07/what-makes-ofo-bike-tick.html

Unfortunately OFO bikes use tamper resistant technology that makes forensic disassembly a one way process for some things like the electronic lock assembly. All of the police station bikes were missing chains, kick stands, and baskets, so putting the one I have back in service will be a problem. The description of the electronics that Riyadth found is spot on. I have yet to test run the gear motor, which is really cute.

This is a really cool example of engineers working around a problem without making too many sacrifices.

Someone stole the plot of the Martian, except it's not on mars. Dust Storm, base evacuation, and escape rocket

Total guess: shooting game. Cylindrical durable plastic canister game pieces shot through opening and closing storage portals. End game: steep ramp, or maybe balancing with alliance partners on something as in some past games. Seems like they’ve done climbing enough years in a row.

I note something in this video, and in the earlier ones: there are clouds of dust and/or rocket exhaust featured. I am speculating that there might be a "reduced vision" component in the upcoming event. Maybe a smoke machine in front of the drivers stations? Probably only for a part of the match. Something that gives an advantage to teams that implement telemetry/video feeds from their robot back to the driver station.

Possible clue in the teaser video? I was going through the video frame by frame ( '.' (period) to go forward, ',' (comma) to go back), and noticed something unusual about the timestamps in the upper left corner. They don't seem to advance in a sane or uniform manner. Looking at the first few timestamps, I see them displayed for a different number of frames each:
20:30:18:06 3 frames
03:02:53:19 4 frames
11:40:19:06 2 frames
18:58:15:29 1 frames
16:22:32:02 1 frames
15:49:04:12 3 frames
18:02:29:02 2 frames
14:39:37:27 2 frames
07:01:20:00 2 frames
etc.

I speculate that the number of frames the timestamp is displayed correlates to the significant number within the timestamp, since none that I observed were displayed for more than 4 frames, and there are 4 digits per timestamp.

So, if the third digit in the first timestamp is important, and the 4th in the second, etc., this could represent a sequence of numbers like this:
18:19:40:18:16:04:02:39:01:etc

Does anyone care to speculate what that might mean? And does anyone have the energy to go through the entire video and capture all the timestamps and the number of frames they are displayed?

If that is indeed true, someone could look into climatology, there could be a correlation to those numbers and an ‘atmosphere’ or weather we should expect. For instance, those numbers could potentially mean a storm on planet Primus. Though of course we already know there’s an avalanche.

Additionally, my guess for a game is as such: Robot alliances are expected to prepare their planetary base before the avalanche hits. When the time runs out is when the avalanche hits, and to prepare for that, robots might have to complete tasks around the field. Perhaps they move around the field in order to gather supplies their base will need in an avalanche. Tele-op could be a ‘roving’ stage; as in, when robots are unmanned (or only programmed to move, not having a human driver) they could move around to collect things that are considered outside of their base. Special items or something like that, that are only to be taken in tele-op. I noticed in the teaser that the door closing has 3 sections. An alliance consists of 3 robots. Perhaps endgame would be all the robots working together to close individual parts of a door. Obviously that seems pretty easy, so perhaps they can only access their door-pieces if they have all the items they collected previously arranged in specific positions. Who knows? Or, if FIRST does climbing again, all the robots have to ‘board’ (read: climb) a rocket or shuttle before the time runs out and the avalanche hits them. The human player might also be pretty important this year, because in the teaser there were lots of shadows of people walking around. Or, as Kenneth said, they stole the plot of Andy Weir’s The Martian; maybe the premise of the game is saving a stranded astronaut.
Again, all of this is crazy speculation, and likely way too specific or flawed to be true. My thoughts for the game (simplified) are as such: The premise could be a) preparing a lunar base for an avalanche, b) trying to leave the planet via rocket before the avalanche hits, and/or c) trying to save an astronaut before the avalanche gets them.

I think it IS climatology because the second teaser seems to show a “Martian” (referring to the book/movie) type of storm there is a scene from ‘The Martian’ that looks a lot like one of the scenes in that teaser.

Another interesting thing to keep in mind: Latency.
Martian rovers, and anything further out, suffer from the fact that radio waves take a long time to get to them. That means that "real-time" human control of these vehicles is not possible. If you move the joystick forwards, it can take minutes to get feedback that the rover is moving forwards, and when you release the joystick it will take minutes for the rover to stop moving. So you crash in to a lot of stuff.
I doubt they'd do it, but the field is capable of increasing latency ("lag") in the control channel, delaying messages from the driver station to the robot, and vice versa.
It would mean we'd have to rely more on autonomous, pre-programmed functions even throughout the tele-op period.
Also note that recognizing this and building some features into the robot to compensate for latency, would be a very interesting topic to discuss with judges, relevant to the theme of the competition.

Official teaser uploaded by FIRST: https://youtu.be/Rb1byfe5TU
The one I looked at before, with the funny timestamps, is no longer online.
And the new version by FIRST does not have the weird delays in the timestamps, so my code theory just went poof.
Of course, the timestamps themselves could still be a code...

I would like to congratulate Ronan on having the a PSAT score in the top 1% in the nation. Good Job Ronan!

I can’t say enough nice things about exchange student programs. If you’re even vaguely interested chat me/pm me about this. This could totally be you.

I want this for our drivers station -- https://gph.is/2N0GuDZ from ‘Feel Three’ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/feelthree/feel-three-virtual-reality-motion-simulator :sunglasses:

I have a pinewood derby race at work in one week. Does anyone have a nice design idea for my car? Does anyone know how to make it go fast?

We have "Scout" and "Unlimited" classes. Scout class enforces standard rules, and must start with the kit. Unlimited class cannot use ANY of the kit parts, but must conform to dimension and weight limits of the Scout class (so the car runs on the same track. Entries cannot have powered motion (but I think blinking LEDs are OK). We are judged on race speed, but also on creativity.

I am thinking that Scout class would be easier for me, since I have the kit, and very little experience. I'm hoping for something that relates to Spartronics (ie, will you guys be my sponsor?)

Ballast to the weight limit so you have maximum potential energy to convert to kinetic. Keep the weight as far aft as possible so it falls the maximum distance for maximum conversion of potential to kinetic energy. Machine the wheels round with a V cross section for the smallest contact patch. Machine the axles completely smooth; in years past the axle nails had ridges left over from the heading process.
Most people use an electric drill and a file for machining because they don't have a lathe.

I have a lot of experience with a very similar kit, Usually there might be a few bumps on the nail axel. Start by sanding down nail axels with sandpaper. You can do this by putting the nail in a drill and then rotating the nail while applying the sandpaper. This will help smooth out the driving. Next look over each wheel. You want to make sure it is a smooth as possible. If you see any bumps or non smooth spots, you will need to sand them off. You can clamp the wheel in a drill. The inside part of the wheel has an extrusion that you can clamp the drill on. Also sand the outside of the wheel. If the car rubs against one side of the track or the other, it will create friction, so smooth out the sides. Next is the graphite. You will want to apply graphite dry lubricant (The graphite in a pencil is mixed with a little clay so it will not work as well) to the axel hole in the wheel. Make sure that you add enough so that the whole axel whole is covered. If you need graphite, I have some dry graphite lubricant you can have.

We have restrictions on the wheels that seem to prohibit machining them to V shapes. But the axle polishing seems like a great idea.

I still have the big question: What should my car look like? A block of wood painted blue with a yellow gear on it? Or something more exciting? How do I make it look like a robot?

Would a 3.6V lithium D cell from an OFO bike be useful for powering bling? 5 ounces each and I can provide 3.

Maximum car weight is 5 oz. I figured I’d use coin cells for power. Doesn’t have to last too long

Now here's a cool concept for a robot! Check out the YouTube video...

I was thinking about the space theme & maybe considering a “uniform” for drive team. What’s your idea of a cool space-themed crew uniform?

I found this in an image search. I kinda like it is informal yet still sharp: https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:PolitieUniform2014ConceptVoorbeeldtekening.png

But way out in DEEEEP space: https://www.amazon.com/Smiffys-Alien-Costume-Green-Large/dp/B00I8S19MO

It depends upon what we are going for, I'm personally a big fan of the style that ORF went with, where it looks a lot like a professional "uniform". (Like Chris' post)

Jumpsuits for the drive team this year would be pretty great - something like the SOTAbots.

I made it to the finals! (Well, I was one of the 16 cars out of the 37 total that made it to the finals.) I didn't place very high in the final round, though. So a bit above the 50% line. For those interested in a career in pinewood derby-ing, the top four spots were taken by mechanical engineers (or kids of mechanical engineers). So now you know what to major in at college!

Or NASA jumpsuits. The color is right https://www.amazon.com/Aeromax-Adult-Flight-Suit-Small/dp/B000H16G9G/ref=mpsa14/141-5647596-5995367?ie=UTF8&qid=1539496983&sr=8-4&pi=ACSX236SY340FMwebpQL65&keywords=nasa%2Bjumpsuit&dpPl=1&dpID=41Ti%2BmoprlL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1#immersive-view1539497011653

BIG FIRST ANNOUCEMENT: There will not be a bag day in ---2020--- and beyond. The last bag day will be in 2019 for Destination Deep Space.

Us speaking to the freshmen in 2020: “you don’t know how good you have it, back when we were young, we had 6 weeks to build a robot… in the freezing snow.”

They forgot about the Duke Engine. It is a 5 cylinder engine that uses 3 spark plugs and has roughly the same power output as a 6 cylinder engine with the same individual piston size (ie. a 3L V6 has 6 .5L cylinders and it will produce about the same power as a 2.5L Duke engine). The thing that makes it different is that it is fully axial rather than linear.

fyi: i wasn't aware of this, but chief delphi is down right now migrating to discourse. It will soon require you to reset your password to complete your own migration. Then, of course, you'll need to spend some time learning discourse... I'm not familiar with it myself so I'll be starting with the link provided by chief delphi here:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-new-user-guide/96331
(i'll leave it to team leaders to decide whether to cross post this elsewhere)

I saw a mention or two of this as a possibility (I thought), but I guess it was actually a plan. Timing seems really risky to me with kickoff less than a week after migration - why not do this mid-summer? Overall, this will be good... modern platform many students already use rather than crusty old BBS (though I do think it was functioning fine). Thanks for sharing.

FIRST released 3d models of the field for printing! We can print our own mini field for the contest. Maybe useful for strategy? Probably useful for outreach, to explain the game to people. Especially cool if we print a tiny model of our robot too!
https://library.automationdirect.com/first-2019-3d-printed-field/

That page includes an image of the floorplan of the field, which may be good for strategy work. Also, is it just me, or would it be cool to make buttons that look like mini hatch panels?

I know we have blue ABS - do we have red? Seems like the main field floor could be foam core board or something.

Hey Spartronics: just had to share this with you. I’m in NYC at a real estate & technology conference and one of the new business trends they were discussing comes right from FIRST! See this slide that came up!

At least I'm happy that my driveway is 1/3 the length of my dad's while I was in high school (in Rhode Island)... That was a lot of shoveling.

no such luck here. I spent one winter in upstate NY with a loonng driveway. the neighbors took pity on me and let me borrow their snowblower.

That is one SWEET drivetrain! Looks like 4 omnis on the corners, and 2 omnis in the middle underneath (at right angles). You can see the ones on the bottom when it climbs.
I wonder what the driver controls are like in order to control both sets of wheels...

I've always liked elevator-arm hybrids like this. I think 148 looks faster, but as usual Mean Machine created an awesome robot.

Wow, a center arm like that was our lowbot concept before we decided to change to enhanced Everybot. Nice implementation!

The dual star wheel hatch panel grabber is very creative. Will be one of the lowbots to watch this year for sure.

The year after we will make robots that float in the water filled holes left by the tree movers.

Very proud of @Merrill Keating, @Violet Advani, @Chris Mentzer, and @Peter Hall for showing up at tonight's City Council meeting in support of Bainbridge Island Girl Up month and STEM for Social Good. They made us proud! Will send photos and video to marketing soon.

Here's the full reveal - another lowbot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su5ETzqAsI

Hello- there is a possibility I can attend the meeting this evening if I can get a ride to the ferry around 7:00 pm. Anyone able to help? I can pay for gas.

Here are a couple robot reveal playlists:
- Cargo passthru bots like us (9 of them, including the original 118 Everybot): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsiEJAZgdF8JEdm068Mj75Q3yaYJ550io
- Low cycling robots (75 robots - filtered from a much larger playlist). I ordered these by team number, with the oldest teams first). As far as I can tell, 2910 Jack-in-the-Bot from PNW might be the fastest, so they'll be a good benchmark for target cycle times. They're also competing in Mt. Vernon right now. Link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsiEJAZgdF8LrGGn-4uWxwfMt01Q87Q7s

Mt. Vernon Week 1 Competition is streaming:
Mix of panning close-ups & full field view during matches: https://www.twitch.tv/firstwared1
Just full field view during matches (better for scouting practice): https://www.twitch.tv/firstwared2
I watched a few matches, and this seems to be a hard game. Not much scoring. Even Jack-in-the-Bot was not world beatingly good. I suspect the low scoring is because of poor sightlines and because playing the game on the real field with other robots is proving to be quite different than practice.

Jack-in-the-Bot and Apex are 1 and 2, and they just teamed with the #17 team to win with a high score of 63 points. Notably, Apex tipped during the L3 climb, and Jack-in-the-Bot dozed them out of the way and did the L3 climb themselves, so the alliance got 3 RP.

Couple lowbots I like:
https://youtu.be/UaEb1YvvSoE --> a lateral sliding rail is integrated into the whole system making lining up faster
https://youtu.be/SIXFBqqWRd8 --> just a cleverly simple low bot design - the cargo handling design is quite simple, yet seems very effective. By handling cargo all on one side, there is all the space in the world on the other side to build an effective hatch panel handler (but they went with velcro/eject anyway)

Creative triple level 2 HAB start...

Hey, I want to encourage the team to pay attention to current discussion on the Boeing 737 Max 8. I expect the careful reader will see a lot that looks familiar.
The problem with the Lion Air flight was the MCAS went to work when it shouldn’t have. The 737 MAX was climbing normally, but due to a faulty sensor the digital flight data recorder detected a hard-to-believe 20-degree difference in the angle of attack between the left and right sides. Over the next 10 minutes, the pilots repeatedly tried to pull the plane’s nose back up, but the MCAS kept forcing the yoke forward, pushing the plane down. Ultimately, the plane crashed into the Java Sea, killing everyone aboard.
If the pilots had known the MCAS was at fault, they could have shut down the plane’s ability to automatically adjust its trim (which determines its position in the air) so they could manually do it themselves. But they ended up “behind the airplane,” confused and trying to figure out what the computer was up to. “When you’re behind the airplane, you’re almost dead,” Aimer says.
That may be because they didn’t know the MCAS existed: In the jet’s manual, Boeing had not noted its presence. In November, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company had worried about “inundating average pilots with too much information—and significantly more technical data—than they needed or could digest.” Meanwhile, Boeing was pitching the 737 MAX to airlines as being so similar to the previous generation that pilots flying the old 737 would barely need any new training.

I am building a playlist of our matches on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcarDjxrehfnvceWDTSYURkeF0Leho8

I put all of today's matches on the playlist. Some only had the "wide" field view available. I will update it if the regular view becomes available later.

I find the wide view superior because the multi-cam pan view makes it hard to follow a particular robot. Thanks Riyadth!

So do we have enough points to compete in districts? Or are we just competing for the award

My new favorite podcast is Relatively Prime, "Stories from the Mathematical Domain." If the title entrigues you, you may like it as well. Here are some teasers:
- Hank Aarron, the famous baseball player, has an Erdos number of 1 (sort of)
- There is an alarmingly simple formula for the n-th non-square integer (2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 ....)
- You've got familiarity with regular polygons in 3D -- pyramids, soccer balls, D12 dice -- you can do the same thing in 4 dimentions. If you project them down into 3 dimensions they look really cool. I wonder if we 3D print one, like this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:97757
The podcast is actually very accessible to the lay listener.

Does anyone want to see the 6:50 showing of “Us” with me at the theatre? I prefer not to watch Spooky Movies alone

Just out of curiosity, I signed up for the PNW District event and they said they have no available spots. So did anyone get an email that said they will be volunteering? I talked to Emerson and he said he didn’t get a spot either.

FWIW: I signed up a few days ago, and on my dashboard it still says 'pending'. Maybe their full?

I'll ask my Microsoft mentor network friends if they know how it works. Maybe one has to volunteer well in advance for DCMPS.

Here’s what I received back, including contact information for a person to whom a student could reach out for more information. It may not help this year, but could help for future....

Subject: DCMPS Volunteering Question
Hi,
Our team usually qualifies to compete at DCMPS here in PNW, but this year we were plagued with problems & didn’t make it (except competing for Engineering Inspiration; we’re grateful for that opportunity).
A good number of students decided to take the opportunity to volunteer at DCMPS since the robot isn’t competing, but as far as I know none of them were accepted.
I told them I’d ask around to see if I could find out why. Do any of you know how DCMPs volunteering works? We’ve had team members volunteer at district events, and almost all volunteer at the FLL event we host annually, but we don’t have experience with this event.
Thanks!
Chris - 4915 Spartronics mentor

Cruz and I were talking about this earlier. He got a rejection email at first, but didn't get one after selecting only 'Assign me as needed.' I got a rejection email at first when I only signed up for Thursday and Saturdat, but didn't get one after resubmitting it for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with 'Assign me as needed.'
We're both 'pending' now.

I selected only “assign me as needed” for Friday and Saturday and got a rejection email the next day

That could be because you didn't select all three days? I got one when I signed up for Thursday and Friday at first.

@Cruz Strom So despite the mass amounts of rejection emails we're still on for carpooling?

We are still carpooling to the event every day. If you sign up to carpool, you have received an email about who you are riding with which day. When we get to the event, we will leave our contact info at pit admin so they can call if they need help.

I'm not sure if everyone noticed: Coach Chee also inquired about volunteering at DCMPs, and he found out people can volunteer each day at around 9am and post-lunch. So it's still valid to go & try to volunteer if you have time. And if that doesn't work out, then just enjoy attending and watching Destination Deep Space played at a high level, especially elims.

Hey, let me pitch something new to you. Next year, BHS will be hosting a Rotary Exchange student from the Netherlands. She'll be living with local families, 3 of them over the course of her stay from September to June. Which families? Well, that's where you guys come in.
My family has done this sort of thing several times and found it tremendously enriching. Without fail, the students we've hosted have been fun to be with, very well behaved and enriched our lives in ways we would never have imagined. Here are a couple of the specific ways it touched us:
- My 9 year old daughter found out that a young woman really can live for almost a year, away from her family, in a foreign country, even if she can't speak great English. That summer she stayed with her host sister for six weeks in Kagoshima, Japan. She was 10 at the time. She learned enough Japanese to push back when the boys on the soccer field got a little uppity.
- My freshman daughter learned to get along with her exchange sister even though her family's background is very different than ours. She later spent a semester in Zacatecas Mexico living with a her host sister's family.
- I got to see BHS from the perspective of girls with radically different backgrounds. Somethings are different: Prom (they go, even if they're Juniors), Scarlet Letter, Ceramics class. Somethings are the same: Dating, Netflix, friends.
Oh, one more thing ... for the boys. All our host students have been girls, as is this one. So, I know whereof I speak. Every year, the exchange-student girls end up hanging out together. A lot. Gentlemen, it's the mother of all ice breakers. Pay attention.
We treat travel like it's a reward for working hard your entire life. That's wrong. Finding out how other people think and live, that's what travel is and its vital training for growing up. This isn't quite that, but it's pretty close.
I want to strongly encourage you to float this idea at the dinner table tonight: "So, one of the mentors at Robotics talked about hosting a Rotary Exchange student for 3 months. What do you think?" See where the conversation goes. Let me know.

Interesting article about Ed Catmull (ex Pixar chief) who has no "mind's eye", despite being a key figure in advancing 3D animation. It that expands into a discussion about how some people can visualize so well they can replay every movie they ever saw in their heads, while others are like Mr. Catmull & cannot conjure the simplest image. Interestingly, there are very talented artists at both ends of the "mind's eye" spectrum. What can you see with your "mind's eye"? https://www.bbc.com/news/health-47830256

Looks great mounted and polished up like that! I think our group learned a lot from that project. Thanks for sharing the photos.

where's the video of it generating energy? Can you charge an iphone with it? :slightlysmilingface:

Ahhh.... sure! Yeah! in the next release, for sure!! Actually, we weren't able to get it to run consistently before we ran out of time. The junction where the vertical brass support shaft attaches to the two horizontal rods isn't exactly right. It's supposed to slide for adjustment and tuning but then stay in place during operation. There's just a bit too much play there and so it doesn't stay put. Once it moves, then the piston's connecting rod binds a bit and we lose speed.
It's really pretty nice work though. The BARN has it on display outside the metal shop.

Anyone planning to go to the IRS social this Saturday at Issaquah High School, please respond here so we can arrange rides.

In Turing division, NRG (Newport robotics group) is allied with the poofs(254)! In a different division, Lion robotics(2907, from Auburn Mountainview) is on the same alliance as Robowranglers (148)!

Ok hear me out, the theme of the robotics competition seems to be the future. With FTC being based around tall towers. With are game being based on charging or recharging with electricity. I was at first thinking it was going to be similar to first steam works where you have to fuel something with some game element. But then it hit me, the part about infinite, in our life we use nature(which makes sense, since in the teaser it shows people trying to help nature) to create energy. We harness the WIND and WATER to create REusable energy to CHARGE our devices as an “INFINITE” source of Power. Don’t you get it water game and flying game confirmed!!!

Themes seem to be future, urban, and renewable energy. Maybe the robots’ role within the game theme will be solar panel maintainers (cleaning, fixing...) or maybe couriers of batteries or power cells that have been charged with renewable energy sources.

I made a spartronics egg! The Instagram symbol is for marketing, wrench for mechanics, binary for programming (it says “programming” if you’re wondering), and circuits for electronics. The darker blues are to match our mugs. It says 4915 at the top and spartronics at the bottom. My apologies to CAD and Bumpers, I couldn’t fit any more symbols.

I don’t quite know how to send links to photos so sorry if I’m taking up too much space

Here's deeper dive into eggbots from the CAD and robotics perspective. The underlying computer hardware and software is the same as in the XCarve. the software they recommend for designing the surface patterns is used at the BARN for the laser cutter. If you'd like to build your own robot, this is one place to start.

Here's another tiny robot. A plotter made from a couple of old CD/DVD drives: https://hackaday.com/2019/04/29/build-a-plotter-using-scrap-dvd-drives/

Speaking of Math, from the current MSDN magazine a short, enjoyable article on the "Calculus vs Statistics in High School" by fellow Robotics Mentor David Platt.
In includes this gem,
"They asked 61 doctors the following question: “If a test to detect a disease whose prevalence is 1/1,000 has a false positive rate of 5 percent, what is the chance that a person found to have a positive result actually has the disease, assuming you know nothing about the person’s symptoms or signs?”
"Figure it out yourself. I’ll bet you get it wrong. So did three-quarters of the doctors they asked. Would you say 95 percent? 90 percent? I’ll stop writing to give you time to work it out."

We just found out today that band is having its final Spring concert on the same night as the final team meeting. I can make part of the leadership meeting but the mentor/team meeting isn't likely...

@Doña Keating the concert is actually Thursday not Wednesday. It interferes with the Design class but that is about it.

Thanks, @Harrison. Merrill told us it was Wednesday but just checked her Google calendar and it is Thursday. As you were...

You guys! NASA is letting people submit songs for astronauts to listen to on their way to the moon. It’s super fun, I’ve already submitted “Fly me to the moon” by Frank Sinatra. Check it out!
https://www.nasa.gov/moontunes

@Nora Wilson Excellent choice! I coincidentally sang that song with Neil Armstrong, Gene Cernan, and other astronauts in attendance at an alumni event when I was in the varsity glee club at Purdue University. A lot of astronauts are Purdue alumni.

What an interesting factoid, @Chris Rininger. Now we'll have to hear you sing. Thanks for the share, @Nora Wilson...it's a brill one.

I think the alumni event might have been tied to the 20th anniversary of the moon landing LOL

I assume some of you know these BI students who attend Raisbeck. Exciting news! From George S senior: Back in first position! Two Bainbridge Island teens are on a team racing for a national title. After setting a track record yesterday, their team was met with a strong response from their leading competitor. After dueling it out at speeds up to 80 miles an hour, the field has settled into more sustainable speeds. The Raisbeck Aviation High School Team fought back into the lead. Locals George Sidles (Team Captain) and Nic Nehmeth (Driver) worked most of a year with their team to design and build the car they are racing. http://www.solarcarchallenge.org/challenge/results-live.shtml

Hey I was thinking about this a lot during the parade today. We spend a lot of time with the peninsula alliance but every time we go to an event of some kind. I feel like there is very obviously some kind of team based separation(Spartornics hangs with spartonics, ROCK hangs with ROCK, so on). And the worse part is that every time I start to feel comfortable talking to people from other teams, The parade starts and we begin to go our separate ways once it is done. It really does suck. So I was thinking we Should do some kind of Peninsula Alliance social(Like what 1318 IRS do). It would be a great way to meet other people from other teams so then we feel more comfortable at competitions and parades. I have no idea where to start with something like this. And also with logistics of where, when or even “should we do this in the first place”. I haven’t thought of anything else I just wanted to put it out and get feedback on the idea.

I think this could be a lot of fun. We don’t necessarily need to limit ourselves to the Peninsula Alliance; we could even invite other teams.

Amid the discussion about the release of the draft rules for No More Stop Build Day (see FRC channel), a couple people noticed there are places in the rules that suggest future games (even this year’s game) may involve tasks considered to be mutually exclusive. In other words, by design of the game, a single robot cannot possibly do everything due to size constraints. For example, a game with a task involving placing a large object at a high target (like 2018) and also a task involving collecting and storing as many small objects as possible and shooting them into a high goal (like 2017). In this situation, some teams would create a modular robot with ability to switch from major task A to major task B from match to match. Many teams would still focus on just one task. I think it’s an interesting idea...

Interestingly, this was something I saw A LOT at the FLL competition. (@Terry Shields For more detail...) Many teams had a locked in chassis, then switched modules for the different tasks of the game. Granted, their rules are much more designed for this tactic, but it's an interesting 'tell' that this concept is not unknown to FIRST.

Don’t think this concept applies to FRC . Each time you switch a module you will need to reweigh and reinspect the robot. The inspectors may frown upon this . It was mentioned in the rule release.

Hmm. As I read I3 and I4 in the rules, it seems like multi-configuration robots may be one of the things they’re now allowing for with their updated inspection approach... https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.net/frc2019/2020FRCRuleChangesStopBuildDay.pdf
We won’t know until kickoff, of course

I noticed there are 35 team members in the FRC channel, and there are 50 team members in the random channel, so I’m sharing this here for the 15+ people who may not be aware the FRC teaser comes out tonight!

If you want to see what fusion can do, this is a bike someone made. Look at the small details on the fork, tires, derailleur, brakes, and shock. The details are so good that I know the fork is a FOX Float 40 RC2, the tires are Maxxis Minion DHFs, the derailleur is a Shimano Saint, the brakes are Shimano Saints, and the shock is a Fox DHX2 with a Fox titanium coil. This is kinda insane.

Just in case anyone is available & willing, a Microsoft colleague sent out the following plea for help judging FLL in Auburn this weekend...
Hi all,
This weekend, a number FIRST LEGO League competitions are happening across Washington. Teams of kids ages 9-14 have spent time since the beginning of the school year building and programming a robot made out of LEGOs to perform missions on a game board, and have been working on an innovation project where they identify a problem and develop an innovative solution. This season’s challenge is called CITY SHAPER, and is part of the FIRST RISE theme (“powered by Star Wars”).
Teams compete in a combination of four disciplines, of which three are judged – Innovation Project, Robot Design, and Core Values (the fourth is performance in the robot game). We need adults to serve as judges. I will be volunteering as Judge Advisor this weekend in Auburn, meaning that I will be managing the judging panel, and our Saturday event still needs more judges of all kinds. It currently looks as if I’ll need to run with a skeleton crew!
Thank you!
Leif
