The Great Registration System Crash of 2016 I am so sorry for the trouble we experienced with initial event registration today. We at FIRST HQ really do understand the investment of resources teams make to participate in our programs, and teams have the right to expect that we will be holding up our end of the deal by making things happen like we say we will. We failed to do that in this instance, and once again, I apologize.

Teams are ‘secured’ if they have either paid their registration fee or have provided us with a purchase order or letter of commitment from a grantor or sponsor formally committing to payment.
hey - there's a game hint here! (5 person drive team?)
Maybe we need to implement AI in the robot, and it becomes the fifth member of the drive team.
I noticed in one of the DLC images show 6 people working on a robot, but on the wall there is a portrait of only 5 of them. Maybe there will be 5 on the drive team...
One of the ringtones was a train whistle - robot on rails?
I'd say we'll be feeding coal into a train firebox but that's pretty anti-recycling and -clean energy
We could look at DARPAS Nuclear Powerplant On A Chip project and use their research to build a miniature nuclear reactor that spins steam turbines
It’s the time of year again! One way to get excited about the upcoming season is to start utilizing all the tools available to teams. Virtual items are included as part of the Kit of Parts system and are available to all secured 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition teams. Good news, the Q&A system is back up and running. I’m very sorry for the break in service between yesterday and today. We know this is an incredibly important time for teams to be able to get their rules questions answered, but we felt it was best for us to take this break to correct a security issue that had been identified.
I’d like take this opportunity to thank the entire FIRST community for your outpouring of well wishes and positive energy during my recent bout with cancer. Your support really helped speed my recovery and has lifted my and my family’s spirits along the way.
Team: this is such an important point that we might want to assign someone to measure, track and enforce this rule. While the CAD specs may pass muster, it's not the same as actually measuring the robot with bumpers to verify this.

For things that must be done, it’s always a good idea to have a ‘Plan B’. With FIRST STEAMWORKS, the field must be able to count the fuel being scored in the boiler. And while we have confidence in our equipment being able to handle that very well, things happen.

I apologize for the challenges we had at our events this weekend. While most folks, from the preliminary results of our post-event surveys anyway, still had a great experience, many events were finding themselves running late or delivering fewer qualification matches to our teams than they had hoped.
I'm happy to see that Week 2 events seems to run, for the most part, more smoothly than Week 1. The first ever official FIRST Robotics Competition event in China was a huge success! I attended the Arizona North Regional and had a wonderful time - what a great event!

Hi FRC Teams!
I’m writing to let you know that we have a grant opportunity available that can help you grow FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams in your area! This past season, 75 sites were awarded the grant. One of the successful implementations of the program has been FRC and FTC teams using the grant to start and coach FLL Jr. teams. We have an additional 30 grants to award for the upcoming season.
Participating Teams and Schedule
We now have our full slate of teams participating in the upcoming Festival of Champions! Along with our 2017 Chairman's Award winning Teams, 3132, Thunder Down Under, from Sydney, Australia, and 2614, MARS, from Morgantown, West Virginia, USA, as our guests of honor, we have the following teams competing:
Festival of Champions Wow, sometimes the hype really is real! The Houston Alliance, considered by some to be the underdogs, winning the first two matches, which would have ended it if it had been a standard three match playoff? And St Louis roaring back, taking the next three, a loss in any of which would have ended the run? And a world record unpenalized high score in the final match, and zero penalties in every match? What impressive gameplay, and so exciting!
Saying ‘Thanks’ There’s a proverb, or at least people say there’s a proverb**, that “It takes a village to raise a child.” Regardless of the extent to which that saying rings true to you, I think it generally does take a village to support a FIRST Robotics Competition team.
Event Preferences - More Q, More A, and an Unnecessary U We’ve answered a few more questions that have popped up in response to our blog announcing the move to a preference system for event assignment. We also added detail to one of the original answers that was incomplete. You can find this information in an FAQ document posted <a...
Making Volunteering for FIRST Even Better The Volunteer Resources Department has been hard at work this summer improving many resources to enhance our volunteer’s experience with FIRST. At the Championship events, we held feedback sessions with our volunteers to find out how FIRST could improve and one of the things we kept hearing was that the volunteer roles did not accurately represent what the responsibilities were.
The Teaser and More A teaser for the 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition, you shall have. If things go as planned, we’ll be releasing it broadly at 8 PM Eastern Time on Thursday, September 14th, on YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitter, at a minimum. If things don’t go as planned, you will hear about it. Then we’ll hear about it.
More on Volunteer Roles... Even Though You Didn’t Ask :) Hi FRC Teams and Volunteers,
By now, many of you have read my last blog about the updates to our Volunteer roles. Here’s a little more information about why, and how, we added some of these important age requirements!
Event Data Improvements – Don’t be a Dinosaur! Today we wanted to remind you about some features and functionality of the FRC Events website and API. At all official events, the Field Management System (FMS) sends data about the event to FIRST’s servers in real-time and we make that data available on both our webpages and our API.
It’s like you walk into the kitchen, and someone has a big ol’ pot of chili cooking, not quite ready, but almost. One whiff and you can say hasta mañana to any free will you thought you had. Of their own volition, your legs walk themselves over, bringing along, just for the ride, your now-useless grey matter and anything else that happens to be attached.
2018 Beta Testing and 2017 Usage Reporting This year we are once again looking for 90 teams, 30 for each software language, to help us test the 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition software. A small number of teams have been invited to bypass the application process based on past performance in Beta testing.
2018 FIRST Robotics Competition Season Teaser OK. We’ve been trying to keep this quiet.** But at 8 PM Eastern Time today, we’ll be releasing the teaser for the upcoming season.
Training on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion One of the Five Strategic Pillars of FIRST is Increase Diversity. As Don Bossi, President of FIRST, said in this blog “we need kids of all backgrounds, capabilities and social circumstances to contribute and participate in addressing the world’s toughest challenges and making the world a better place for future generations.”
The Teaser and Event Preferences 100,000 Views
It seems like the 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition Season teaser has been well received by the community. Between YouTube and Facebook, we’ve already exceeded 100,000 views. And most comments I’ve seen have been positive.
Event Preference System and DLC Pack #1 The Event Preference System we’ve been talking about for weeks is now open! We hit a bit of a rough patch when we first opened at Noon, but the system seems to be performing well now. For those of you who experienced issues, sorry about that. If something in the systems still does not seem right to you, please contact us.
Event Preference Submission Deadline Thursday! Just in case you missed the 23 tweets, 12 emails, 7 blog posts and 2 carrier pigeons we sent directly to the home of every FIRST Robotics Competition mentor on this planet, the deadline to submit your event preferences is tomorrow, Thursday, September 28th, Noon, Eastern Time!
Event Assignment Issues We found a bug in the software that was used today to assign teams to events. I apologize for this. Approximately 5% of teams were not assigned the correct event.
We kept the lottery numbers teams had been assigned during the first run of this process and re-ran the process with the bug corrected. We then compared the first-run results with what the results would have been if the bug had not been present.
Kit of Parts – 2018 Drive Base Kit Option and International Game Pieces Drive Base Kit Option
Your 2018 Kickoff Kit will again include a drive base kit! Maybe; it’s up to you.
Veteran teams are invited to choose a $450 Voucher from AndyMark (available 11/16, and yes there will be pre-kickoff vouchers again) instead of receiving a drive base kit with their Kickoff Kit (all other teams will automatically receive the drive base kit). In case you were wondering, pre-kickoff vouchers will be part of the Virtual Kit with details to come later.
Stop Build Day 2018 About one year ago, in this blog, we revealed the results of an extensive survey we did of the community regarding their thoughts on Stop Build Day. No survey is perfect, but if this one showed anything, it showed that there is no strong consensus one way or the other on this topic so fundamental to our culture and how we operate.
The Backfire Effect I learned something interesting this week.
Wikipedia has an entry on ‘common misconceptions’ which I found interesting. Before I provide the link, I should give you a warning that one of the misconceptions, out of the many listed, is about the etymology of commonly heard, but vulgar, word. International Game Pieces

This option closes this Thursday, November 9, 2017, at Noon Eastern Time. See the blog for more details. If you want to exercise...
Behind the Lines
The next episode of Behind the Lines premieres Wednesday, December 6th, at 8 PM Eastern Time here!
Hello FIRST Volunteers,
As you know, FIRST Robotics Competition is an ever-growing program and as FIRST Robotics Competition grows so does our need for volunteers. FIRST wants to ensure that we give you, our volunteers, the best training and support that we can, while creating a great volunteer experience. We are constantly looking for ways to enhance the support we provide.
Kneeling During National Anthems In the United States, some National Football League (NFL) players have knelt during the playing of the United States National Anthem at the start of games. They are doing this as a way to highlight the problem of racism in this country, or to show support for their teammates on this issue, or both. This act of protest has become a hot topic in the US, with many voices offering their opinions.
FIRST Championship Allocation for Districts and FIRST POWER UP Buttons We’ve determined the number of FIRST Championship slots the Districts are getting in 2018. See the table below:
More Event Rules Updates A few years ago, we did away with the Administrative Manual for FIRST Robotics Competition, opting instead to put most of the information that had been in that manual right on the website. The idea was that much of the Administrative Manual was ‘evergreen’ in that the information and rules rarely changed from season to season, so it made little sense to keep them locked away and secret like the game rules.
Suicide Hits Home Martha Dickey is the Stewardship Manager in the FIRST Development Department. The Development Department is the group within FIRST that works hard to ensure we have the sponsorships we need to continue meeting our mission. Martha and the rest of the Development group are the kind of behind-the-scenes folks our teams are unlikely ever to meet, or even hear about. But their work is critical in powering the FIRST engine in delivering life-changing programs to thousands of young people.
Award Submission Date Reminders
As we’ve said probably a dozen times, the best way to make sure you are on time for something is to plan to be early. FIRST Robotics Competition Award submissions are great examples of things for which you’ll want to be on time.
As a reminder, the deadlines are below. Please consider setting earlier internal team deadlines, so you aren’t sweating it out last minute hoping you hit the button in time.
Kit of Parts Info Great (Kickoff Kit) Expectations
In addition to finding out FIRST POWER UP details on Saturday, each team attending a local Kickoff will also leave with this year’s Kickoff Kit items. We’re giving a deliberately vague “heads up” with to what kind of sizes, weights to expect so you can make accommodations to get the goods back to your build space.

Some Metrics and a New Contest In FIRST Robotics Competition, we use some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to keep track of the season and measure community response to the game. Some of these measures may be a bit subjective, but things seem to be going well so far:
Team Avatar Submission System As announced in a previous blog post, FIRST Robotics Competition teams will be allowed to create and submit Team Avatars that will be used to represent their teams during the FIRST POWER UP season. Today we're proud to announce that the Team Avatar submission system is now open!
This is a special message from Woodie Flowers Award winner Liz Calef, on behalf of the Woodie Flowers Awards winners:
Are you concerned that the basic tenets of FIRST are being replaced? Do you think our FIRST students understand what it is to act in a graciously professional manner? Are you dealing with more disciplinary matters on your team than you have time for? You are not alone.
Game Piece Availability Challenges Every year, FIRST Robotics Competition designs a game that includes one or more objects the robots must manipulate, the ‘game piece.’ Many factors go into determining what this game piece will be. We like to change things up from year to year, so the teams are not always dealing with the same types of challenges.
For some reason team updates aren't showing up here anymore. Team update 6 came out recently. https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.net/frc2018/Manual/TeamUpdates/TeamUpdate06.pdf
*Thread Reply:* I wanted to keep frc uncluttered, and strategy would be better, as more people are probably connected to strategy than frc

Power Cube Covers, Deadlines, and Additional Plays As we noted in this blog teams are facing challenges getting Power Cube parts. The most pervasive issue being there’s a shortage on the game piece covers.

*Thread Reply:* More opening and closing doors imagery... Similar imagery in the teaser... hmmmmmm. I stand by my guess that we're shooting cylinder-shaped game pieces (maybe foam rollers like for stretching muscles) into opening and closing storage bay doors prior to some sort of lift off end game task.
*Thread Reply:* Hmmmmmm - maybe like an airlock?!
*Thread Reply:* I think its about an airlock. Especially because airlocks are small and sealed... kind of like an elevator (to an extent).
